1.  What is a CLNC®?

A Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, is a registered nurse who has completed an intensive educational program administered by the Vickie Milazzo Institute and passed the Certification exam given by Vickie Milazzo.  The coveted CLNC® certification, official certification of the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (NACLNC®) attests to the attainment of specialized knowledge necessary to successfully consult on medically-related cases.  Maintaining annual certification is not necessary to continue consulting on Medical Malpractice cases.  Having a Legal Nurse Consultant on your legal team assures that the clinical argument is clearly navigated and the court's frustrations are avoided.

2.  What is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse (ARNP),who has completed a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) consisting of advanced didactic and clinical education and training beyond that required for the generalist registered nurse (RN) role. These advanced practice nurses have specialized medical knowledge and clinical competency to practice in primary care, acute care and long-term health care settings. To be recognized as expert health care providers and ensure the highest quality of care, ARNPs, undergo rigorous national board certification and adhere to a code of ethical practices.  Board certification in Family Practice qualifies an ARNP to manage the health care of individuals across the lifetime continuum from newborns to geriatrics.  ARNPs are quickly becoming the health provider of choice for millions of Americans. As Clinicians that blend the expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health maintenance, Nurse Practitioners bring a comprehensive perspective to health care.

3.  Is a Legal Nurse Consultant used for plaintiff or defense?

I can work on both plaintiff and defense cases.  We can also consult for insurance companies and risk management divisions of medical facilities.

4.  What are some areas of practice where a Legal Nurse Consultant would be very useful?

  • Medical Malpractice

  • Personal Injury

  • Product Liability

  • Workers Compensation

  • Toxic Torts

  • Risk Management

  • Fraud and abuse

  • Elder Law

  • Criminal Law

  • Occupational Health

5.  How can a Legal Nurse Consultant be of use in the role of risk management?

I can provide a comprehensive review of the medical record and identify areas in need of potential modification.  These recommendations can be implemented through the facility's Safety or Quality Improvement Committees to make the appropriate modifications to the the Policy and Procedure Manuals.  Such modifications ensure consistency with current standards of care.

6.  How can a Legal Nurse Consultant aid in the development of a winning case presentation?

My training and experience enables me to interpret the medical data and prepare a dynamic presentation that clearly communicates the parameters of the case.  Developing this informative presentation requires the ability to put complex medical concepts into non-medical, non-legal language that the average person can understand.

7.  Why can't a paralegal do the same work?

It is imperative to have an education in science and medicine in order to accurately decipher the medical details that will deliver the best outcome for your case.  My advanced nursing training and certification as a family nurse practitioner enables me to determine whether proper, accurate and thorough diagnostic evaluation and treatment protocols have been followed. The same cannot be said for a non-medically trained individual, nor a nurse-paralegal.
